Media reports Pentagon director initiating new purge

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed three high-ranking Pentagon officials, including the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), media outlets reported Friday.

Reuters cited sources saying Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse, who led the DIA, along with two senior Navy officers—Vice Adm. Nancy Lacore, chief of the Navy Reserve, and Rear Adm. Milton Sands, overseeing Naval Special Warfare Command—were removed from their posts. The precise reasons for the firings were not disclosed, but they followed leaks suggesting that US strikes on Iran’s nuclear program in June did not completely destroy Tehran’s facilities, contrary to claims by President Trump.

A Washington Post source indicated that Kruse was removed due to a “loss of confidence” after the DIA reportedly concluded that the strikes only delayed Iran’s program by a few months. Trump labeled the leaks as “fake news,” insisting alongside Hegseth that the Iranian facilities had been “obliterated.”

The dismissals are part of a broader Pentagon shake-up under Trump, which has included removing Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr. as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and prompting Gen. David Allvin’s early retirement as Air Force chief of staff. These moves have been linked to disagreements over military strategy. Earlier this week, security clearances were revoked for dozens of officials, with DNI Tulsi Gabbard citing politicization, unauthorized leaks, and violations of intelligence standards.
